The Chicago Waldorf School offers a progressive curriculum that successfully integrates arts and academics to bring out a genuine enthusiasm for learning. Our unique approach to education corresponds to the various stages of human development by focusing not only on what children learn, but how they learn.

Chicago Waldorf School is an urban independent school offering early childhood through twelfth grade education rooted in the ideals, insights, and pedagogical methods of Rudolf Steiner, philosopher, social innovator and artist. The School provides a diverse student body with an education that supports the development of free thinking, self-directed young adults, ready to embark on the next phase of their education, and eager to contribute positively to our world and the global society of the 21st century.

CWS Philosophy & Mission

Chicago Waldorf School is founded upon the central insight of Rudolf Steiner that each human being is comprised of body, soul and spirit and in his/her full maturity is guided by a unique, self-aware core – the human “I”. This conviction informs all aspects of the education and personal relationships within our school. It is our joyful and serious responsibility to help our students activate this deepest center of their being as they move from early childhood to adulthood. To this end, the education we offer is designed to appeal to and nurture the special capacities that emerge at each stage of the child’s and adolescent’s development.

We believe that the forces we are striving to awaken in our students must be alive and growing in the adults who teach them, since we view the relationship between teacher and student to be fundamental to the unfolding of the student’s unique personhood. Chicago Waldorf School therefore expects its teachers to continuously engage in the study of Rudolf Steiner’s anthroposophical work and in self-reflective, meditative practice in order to deepen: their imagination and creativity; their capacity for learning, teaching, and caring relationships; and the quality of their perceptiveness. We believe that the teachers’ willingness to work actively on self-understanding and self-transformation as well as to remain current in their subject areas, their knowledge of human development and their awareness of the emerging world are essential to our fulfilling the mission and goals of Chicago Waldorf School.

In the same spirit, we who are adult members of Chicago Waldorf School realize that education flourishes best within a school environment marked by caring, courtesy, inclusiveness, respect for difference, and full, open communication. We therefore strive to model those characteristics as we carry out our distinctive, but complementary roles in the Chicago Waldorf School community. We also fully support the School’s collegial, consultative and participatory governance and administration and acknowledge that the faculty has unique and primary responsibility for all pedagogical matters.
